Research

I aim to create a short romance film in which a sheepman goes on a journey with just a map and a photograph to find his old true love only to reach her and find she has already moved on. I want my short film to be abstract but still connect with my audience I also would like it to be aesthetically pleasing.

Market Analyse

Im creating an unconventional short romance film where my main character is a sheep/man who part takes in a journey to find his old love. I would like to release my short film onto youtube so it is accessible to anyone who has or can get to a wifi connection.

Target Audience

Before I begin to analyse my market I first need to identify my target audience so I can pin point exactly where my Film will sit in the market. What I aim to produce is quite abstract and needs an open mind to enjoy this statistically younger generations are more open to new ideas according to an article by Jan G. Janmaat and Avril Keating youths are considered to be more tolerant. Therefore I feel my target age for my short film will be ages 16-30 as I feel like the content will be more enjoyed and understood by that age demographic.

I believe that film should include everyone therefore my Target Audience dont have a specific race or gender however Romance films are mostly considered to be feminine movies which is due to bigger social issues surrounding toxic masculinity, according to the website statista romance movies are more popular with women in fact 77% percent of its watch base are women and 55% are men. Using these statistic I know that women are more likely to watch my short film.

I want men to be able to enjoy my short film as a abstract romance and i feel like a-lot of men wont watch conventional romance films because of how they are marketed towards women with conventionally attractive actors I think having a more abstract male character profile with open up the opportunity for men to also enjoy my film.

Market

Youtube is a popular free streaming platform enjoyed by all ages. It makes the most sense to put my finished film on here because my target audience would be those aged 16-25 as i feel this is the appropriate age demographic who will connect and understand the purpose of my short film, Teenagers account for 24% of youtube stats in the uk according to the site cybercrew who also state that in January 2020 youtube was the most used platform with 78% of its users where ages 16-64. These statistic demonstrate to me that youtube is used not only by all ages of my demographic but as-well as those aged outside target audience which widens my viewer pool.

Trends

Google is used by many people to find entertainment, i felt that it was important to find out the popularity of certain terms that relate to my project. I searched the terms Romance film and Abstract Film in google trends. Red is romance and Blue is Abstract. From the graph i know that romance films are searched more than abstract films that tells me too things that is important in the development of my project. Firstly Romance Film is a very popular term that is searched meaning that the market for my short film is large and trending but secondly the graph also shows that abstract films are not very largely searched meaning my pool is a-lot more smaller. This means that i need to find a nice middle ground between abstract and Romance so its enjoyable but still fits the market.

Analysing my Job Role

As my project is a independent project I will take on many job roles however I believe that having a small crew will lead to a successful production, I plan to have small crew to assist me with sound and camera but everything else will be my responsibility. My Main Role will be narrowed down to director/director of cinematography as my main focus is the visual aesthetics of my short film.

Director of Cinematography

A director of cinematography may also be titled as a cinematographer as-well as director of photography. In its simplest terms the director of cinematography (DOC) directs the lighting and camera crew, they are responsible for creating the overall look, colour, lighting and the framing of each shot. In the industry the DOC will work closely with the director to ensure that the choices the DOC is making supports the directors overall vision.

In relation to my project i will technically be director as-well so there wont be any room for miscommunication between DOC and director because i will be taking the responsibilities of both roles, its important to note that director and DOC share very similar responsibilities  so there wont be any issues taking on both roles.

The Responsibilities of a Director of Cinematography

Establishes the visual Style of the Film

The DOC will decide on the visual style and appeal of the film, it is important for the doc to make choices in the films best interest and assure their decisions match the directors overall idea for the film. For example a doc for a sci-fi film will determine what colour pallet will be used (sci-fi often uses cool tones) as-well as the use of florescent lighting which will give a more futuristic feel or tungsten which gives a more warm toned feel.

I will be successful with this responsibility as this project is independent. I'm already aware of the certain aesthetic of my film however to best support my project and research I will need to create a mood board to visualise the exact creative style I want. The mood-board will also allow me to communicate my ideas better with the camera and lighting crew.

Establishes the Camera set up

The DOC will decide on the type of camera, camera lenses, angles and techniques that will best suit the scene and bring it to life. They will communicate with the camera ops to assure the shoot will run smoothly. Doc will also work with the script supervisor and locations manage to access each scene and navigate the most effective placement for the camera. Communication with these people will preserve the intention and scale of the film.

To be successful with this responsibility I will have to assure my knowledge of cameras is adequate to assure when i'm communicating to my camera ops my ideas it is within possibility.

Lighting or every scene

A cinematographer will use lighting to create a visual mood that best suits the scene, they will communicate with the director to assure they create what the director intends to achieve. They must be conscious on how to embellish an image's depth, contrast and contour to support the story's atmosphere.

I will use the knowledge i have acquired from many lighting workshops from my past 4 years at BRIT to take on this responsibility and to be successful with it.

Explores the potential of Every Location

A Successful DOC will have a vast understanding of what visuals please the director and can make an educated recommendation about what shots to capture. As Well as being able to use a location to its full potential.

This is quite a simple and easy responsibility for me to take on as my short film relies on its locations for its aesthetics so I will definitely be using the locations I have chosen to their full potential.

Attending Rehearsal

Attending rehearsals is incredibly important for the doc as the blocking for the scenes will often evolve and develop further each time. Rehearsals allow for the blocking of the actors and equipment, during rehearsal cinematographer will have to adjust and note down camera positions in response to a particular action, and when actors adjust their body positions and blocking, to improve the framing of shot.

In relation to my project i will have to be present as rehearsal even if this wasn't my job role, however my responsibility in rehearsals would be different, in rehearsals I will assure I'm noting down any changes in positions, and that in each rehearsal improvements will be made every time to assure when it comes to the final shoot everything is perfect.

Elevates the directors vision

To be a successful director you must be able to produce ideas and concepts that the director may not have considered, the director has the responsibility of everything to do with the film, which may mean in some areas they are less skilled which means the skills  and ideas you have should be brought forwards to assure all creative concepts that suit the film has been explored.

Michał Sobociński

Michał Sobocinski is a polish cinematographer and is considered one of the most exciting cinematographers and up and coming talents.  He was one of the 10 rising stars of cinematography in the American cinematographer magazine, he has been awarded the Golden Frog at Camerimage 2017 for his cinematography work in “The Art Of Loving”.

Michał Sobocinski was born in Lodz Poland in 1987, He was a cinematography graduate from a film school in his home town in Lodz. He started his work on film sets in 2005 and has acquired many awards over the years, He was awarded the Samuelson Special Mention for best school short film at Plus Camerimage and since then has been working as a cinematographer on many projects from feature films to tv series and documentaries not only in poland but around the world.

Michał Sobociński work has a really notable colour-pallet although he doesn’t share the same pallet you can see that in each project theres a clear pallet and is incredibly vibrant and pleasing visually. His work is incredibly varied throughout different project but the quality of it remains the same, Beautiful. I aim to use his works to develop my ideas for cinematography as i feel his aesthetics for Inpost Jubilaci and Orange match the tone I aim to create.

Influential Media

I decided to analyse 3 Films to help with the development of my Project. I looked at mise en scene in each film aswell as focusing specific films to the influence I want to take out of them for example I looked at the film Wall-E for the purpose of understanding how to connect the audience to a character without dialogue.

Wall-E

Wall-e is a beloved film by many and I believe that comes from its ability to get the audience to connect with main characters without the use of constant dialogue which is exactly why I felt it was important to watch for my research as I plan to not use much dialogue especially from my main character clive.

Wall-e is our main character who is a robot on earth whose job is to collect the trash and compress it into blocks, earth was abandoned by humans along time ago and while Wall-e is cleaning up after them, they have been on a cruise for over 700 years, Eve is Wall-e love interest who is dropped on earth to find plant life so earth can be repopulated, when she comes to earth she meets wall-e and they have a hostile greeting to begin with, but as they interact more they become closer, wall-e shows eve a plant he had found previously and she takes it and begin incubating it, this causes her to go dormant and is basically shut down, wall-e takes care of her through snow and storms until a ship comes and takes her, Wall-e doesnt understand whats happening so proceed to climb onto the ship to rescue her.

The ship is basically a hotel resort just more futuristic the human on the ship have lived the so long they are immobilised and travel on hover chairs and have robots do everything for them, When eve and wall-e are reunited they have to get the plant to the captain in order to repopulate earth, however we find out that a message from the president from 700years agos states that earth is uninhabitable and to never try too, this was before there was any sign of live on earth, auto pilot won't allow the captain to proceed to the protocol to repopulate earth. All works out in the end and wall-e and eve are back on earth however during their mission wall-e motherboard is broken and when eve changes it he completely forgots who eve is and proceeds to do what he was designed for…collecting trash, this is solved quickly as eve upset holds out her hand to hold wall-e like they saw in a tv clip previously wall-e holds her hand back and says her name and the movie ends.

Throughout this film wall-e and Eve only communicate by saying each others names or through body language which exactly why I felt it was important to watch for my research, I was worried that the lack of dialogue in my short film my lead to misinterpretation or my audience not connecting to my characters, Wall-e connects it audience flawlessly without the use of constant dialogue and i wanted to see exactly how they did this.

The scene where Wall-e and Eve meet is the scene that sticks out the most for its ability to use body language as speech and still have the audience attached to the characters and their conversation. Watching this scene I know that in my film my character movements need to be very exaggerated like they are in this scene. For example in the beginning of this clip wall-e is showing Eve the bubble wrap, now in a film with dialogue the communication will probably go with Wall-e saying this is bubble wrap you can pop it, which really seems irrelevant dialogue, but in Wall-e wear it's just body language you can see the scene as a bonding moment, Wall-e Communicated to Eve by bringing the bubble wrap over- reaching it out to show eve and then looking at it and popping it and looking back up at eve.

Alot of the connection is often set with the expression of Wall-e eyes. His eyes will move depending on his emotion, when he's confused they are slanted, when in awe they rise which is a technique I will bring forward to my own production.

Love and Monsters

Love and Monsters is a sci-fi action movie set in an apocalyptic world where our main character Joel who is in his early twenties, goes on a journey from his bunker to find his long lost highschool sweetheart Amy who he had been communicating with over the radio. In the beginning of the film we are told that joe can fight, he always ends up freezing when face to face with a mutant creature but when he leaves his bunker to find Amy he meets a dog called boy who helps him on his journey, as well as two other survivors a 8 year old girl Minnow and her almost fatherly figure Clyde.

Before going there separate ways Clyde and Minnow teach Joel everything he needs to know to survive. Joel ends up hallucinating after being forced to go into a river full of leeches, he passes out and wakes up at Amy’s base, he finds out that Amy had moved on but her partner had died a year ago, and she made it clear to Joel that she had moved on and wasn't the same person anymore, To Joel his romantic gesture to travel 7 days in a deathly world was wasted. Some other survivors from a yacht had came to Amy’s base, and had told the base that they were going to help them, however while contacting his base Joel is given some berries from the captain and to further inspection they were deadly, he rushes out to tell Amy only find her and her crew all drunk, things get worse as Joel is punched to a blackout and wakes up next to everyone tied up. In the end Amy, Boy and Joel win against a fight with the captain and his crew. Joel decides to leave to go help his Colony who is in trouble, when leaving him and Amy share a kiss goodbye for old times sakes but he leaves without his love.

I wanted to research Love and Monsters as its plot is incredibly similar to mine and I felt that I would learn alot about how to shoot the actual journey part of my film. Before watching love and Monsters I thought about having Clive my Sheepman go about this journey alone and not meeting anyone or interacting with many people on the way

however In love and Monster the meeting of others had a massive influence on not only the Joels Character development but also influenced the entertainment value of the movie, i feel that if Joel just went on his own the movie would get incredibly uninteresting. Having different characters on Joel's journey also ment we learnt a lot more about the world they lived in the hardships the characters had to go through and this was found out through their interactions with each other, especially when it came to late night camp fires when they would tell stories about their lives. I think the most valuable relationship is between Boy and Joel, as boy is a dog he obviously can't speak but the use of the dogs barks and body expressions act as speak and we watch as Joels and Boys Relationship get stronger throughout the film, this connection they have also connect the audience not only because cute dogs also catches the audience appeal but their battles together keeps the plot moving and interesting. I feel that having some sort of friend who Clive meets on the way even briefly will keep my audience engaged.

My main focus on watching this movie was how the journey was shot. At the very beginning we had a few over shoulder shots. Time was shown passes in some scenes by having joel walking through different locations but were shot from the same position in the sky, I really liked this technique however with my skill level and Budget I know this something I won't be able to achieve however I feel like I can still use the concept of shooting different locations from the same angle but just not from above. A very useful tip i learnt from this movie was when joel was poisoned by the leeches instead of having a scene of him being found and then taken to the camp we skip straight to the camp through Joel waking up their I feel I could do a similar thing with clive just falling asleep and waking up in a new location this will mean I can find a easier way to get clive from a-b when the journey is getting a slight bit repetitive.

The Proposal

Originally I had planned to watch Fantastic Mr Fox for my third similar media purely for its aesthetics, like I had mentioned in my video essay, however I felt it would be more beneficial for my project's development to look at a live action film with the similar style of aesthetics.

The Proposal is a short romance film set in a french restaurant, where our main characters Dan and Zoe are on a romantic date, Zoe has hidden a ring in a dessert in aim to propose to dan, and just as he finds the ring the restaurant is being robbed and they are held hostage. When the robbers come to Dan and Zoe's table they are told in french to give them their belongings, there's some confusing with the translation and dan gives the robber the ring, which Zoe believes he didnt see and wasn't asking for and Dan did this on purpose because he didn't want to get married. And while hiding under the table they find the truth about their relationship, all ends well when Dan proposes and the robber is shot dead by police.

The warm orange tones of this short film is what I would like to replicate in my short film, especially paired with the burgundy toned costumes and set which really sets a romantic tone overall. The warm tones are achieved by warm tungsten esk lighting but Im assuming its led as tungsten are on their way out of the industry. Like I said I really feel like the costumes add to the overall tone of the film, Zoe is wearing a Navy blue dress and dan is wearing a burgundy suit, this colour pallet paired with the warm lowkey lighting really sets a homey and soft feeling, these aesthetics really grabs the attention of the audience as it gives off a nostalgic feeling of romance. I feel like this colour pallet and lighting design is what I really want to incorporate into my project.

I also felt it was important to look into a short film as most will be produced on a low budget which mine will also be, so I also know what aesthetics is achievable with my skill set as well as budget. The warm aesthetic can be done with lights and gels as well as using the natural sunlight to my advantage, and using premiere pro to colour grade to make my aesthetic even more vibrant. I felt it would also be helpful for me to create a colour palette using scenes from this movie to represent the colour palette I would like to create.

Primary Research

I decided to create a google form to send out to my audience via snapchat and instagram as these are the platforms that are most used by my target audience.

Research Evaluation

After finishing my research, I have a better understanding of how I want my film as well as its contents.

Looking at Wall-E really helped with creating my character and writing the script. Wall-E gave me a better understanding of how to have a character the audience can connect too without dialogue, body language and over exaggerated body language is how I can achieve this. Love and Monsters demonstrated how I could shoot the journey of my film and the narrative style. It was helpful to look at a project with a similar narrative as mine.

The proposal helped outline the colour aesthetics of my piece so I could source my costume accordingly.

My primary research told me alot about my audience and what to include in my project that they will enjoy and what to avoid, it also outlined my demographic.

In conclusion, this stage of my project has given me enough knowledge to begin my pre-production and has outlined exactly how I want my short film to look.
